Samsung Chromebook 3 root password

Hello All,

I just got this unit refurbished, it runs great. I created a backup image on it, and now would like to set up dev mode and try usb boot. I'm running into a series of problems.

The main one here is that in dev mode crosh, I cannot get sudo to work. I get to terminal with ctrl-alt-t or ctrl-alt-f3, and it keeps asking for a password to log in as chronos. I've not explicitly set a root password. I've tried the usual default passwords, "chronos" "chromeos" "password" "0000test", etc. I set an SSH password on activating dev mode, but it does not work and neither does my normal login password.

I've tried powerwash and full restore (no data on it as yet), but nothing will clear this mystery password. I've been prowling the interwebs on this, and aside from suggestions to powerwash or restore, the only other response seems to be "well, it shouldn't require a password", which is not exactly helpful.

Any thoughts out there? I can't be the only person running into this...

Thanks!

TM
